Penyal d'Ifac's Red Route: deciding whether to go beyond the tunnel

en Published 10 September 2026

The Red Route up Penyal d'Ifac is often described as one walk, but the tunnel divides two very different experiences. The lower path climbs through the old Pobla d'Ifac area to viewpoints and the rock-cut passage. Beyond it, polished limestone, exposure and steep terrain demand sure feet and suitable conditions.

Why it matters

The 332-metre limestone monolith is a natural park joined to the coast by a narrow isthmus. Its small area concentrates endemic plants, seabirds and the archaeology of a fortified medieval settlement. Visitor limits and named reservations protect that fragile combination. The summit is not necessary to understand the rock: harbour, salt flats and coastal currents are already clear below the tunnel.

Plan the visit

Reserve the official route for every person before arriving. Start at the park entrance and interpretation area, take time among the lower viewpoints, then reassess at the tunnel. Smooth or damp rock beyond can be treacherous; turn back if footwear, heat, wind, crowding or confidence are wrong. This is sound judgement, not a failed visit.

  • Carry the personal reservation and check the park notice that morning.
  • Wear mountain shoes with grip and take water; shade is limited.
  • Do not feed gulls or approach nests, especially in breeding season.
  • Keep children on the lower route unless official advice and conditions clearly support continuing.

Connect the story

The Calp place guide connects the Penyal to the salt flats, Roman fishponds and old town visible from the path.
